“Latinidad Is Cancelled”

Adopting a hemispheric perspective, this essay problematizes the construct of latinidad by foregrounding how it reproduces Black erasure. I argue that “Latin America,” rather than being geographical designator, is an imagined community Eurocentric to degree its conceptual boundaries exclude African diaspora spaces. then turn understandings whiteness across borders, contrasting perceptions racial mixture in United States and Hispanophone Americas. Lastly, examine works (Afro-)Latinx artists whose nuanced views on race demonstrate potential visual representation provide insight into complex topic beyond black-white binary.
